Looking for family-friendly day trip ideas from Melbourne? How about a visit to Grants Picnic Ground in the Dandenong Ranges where the kids can hand feed the wild birds…!
Outdoor Family Attraction
Grants Picnic Ground is one of the top family attractions in the Dandenong Ranges, about a 45 minute drive from central Melbourne. The Picnic Ground is located within Sherbrooke Forest near the town of Kallista. It’s a great place to bring the kids as they can get up close with the native Australian bird life.
Visitors can pay at the kiosk to access the fenced bird feeding area, you’ll receive a tray with seed that can be used to feed the wild birds. Stand still with your tray and watch the birds (most likely Cockatoos and Rosellas) fly down from the trees to have a feed! The kids will love watching the birds come up real close (unless they are afraid of large feathery creatures!).
The bird feeding area is on a flat surface with plenty of room for prams and wheelchairs located not far from the kiosk and car park. There’s also a licensed cafe serving light meals and refreshments (indoor and outdoor dining), a souvenir shop and toilets. Plus there’s picnic tables and picnic facilities around. The car park can get busy during peak times.
If you want to spend longer here then you can enjoy one of the many bush walks through Sherbrooke Forest, else head off to explore some of the other great family attractions on offer nearby!
