The Dandenong Ranges in Victoria is packed with family attractions! There is so much to see and do – here’s 5 ideas for your next family day out…

1. SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

The Wishing Tree - VIC

SkyHigh is located on the top of Mount Dandenong and is a great place to bring the family. Attractions include the SkyHigh Maze as well as the Giant’s Chair, the Wishing Tree and forest walks. There’s also a cafe and restaurant where you can enjoy breath taking views or enjoy the BBQ facilities located on the grassy picnic area.

2. William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - VIC

William Ricketts Sanctuary is a tranquil place nestled in the Mount Dandenong Ranges. The sanctuary includes over 90 different sculptures depicted aboriginal people carved into tree trunks and rocks. Bring the family to enjoy a peaceful walk through the winding pathways (sealed path which is mostly accessible by pram although there are some hills) and connect with nature.

Parking for Williams Ricketts Sanctuary is in a car park located on the other side of the road. There’s a visitors centre and toilets but no places for a picnic.

3. Grants Picnic Ground

Grants Picnic Ground - VIC

Grants Picnic Ground is one of the top family attractions in the Dandenong Ranges. It’s a great place to bring the kids to get up close with the native Australian bird life. Visitors can pay to access the bird feeding area and are provided with bird seed to attract the birds (including Cockatoos and Rosellas!).

In addition to the bird feeding area, families can connect with nature and enjoy one of the many bush walks through Sherbrooke Forest. There’s also a licensed cafe serving light meals and refreshments (indoor and outdoor dining), a souvenir shop and toilets.

4. Montrose Community Playground

Montrose Community Playground - VIC

Montrose Community Playground features a large play space with a great adventure playground for kids of all ages and abilities. The fun and challenging play equipment includes a double rotating swing (the ‘Cyclone Swing’) and a spinning climbing net! There’s also a wooden village with pretend shops to encourage imaginative role play.

The kids will want to spend hours here! Picnic tables and seated areas are available in shady spots. Toilets are located adjacent to the park.

5. Pig and Whistle Tavern

Pig and Whistle Tavern - VIC

The Pig and Whistle Tavern is a rustic English style country pub located in Olinda. Look for a seat outside adjacent to the sandy kids playground and enjoy drinks and snacks or meals while the kids are entertained!
